Master director Greenaway (THE PILLOW BOOK) outdoes himself with this hideous fairy tale. The thief, Albert Spica, (Gambon) is a gangster, hideous and boorish, who holds court on the same counter inside his opulent restaurant each night surrounded by his lackeys (Tim Roth and the belated Ian Dury included).
While his refined and reserved wife Georgina (Mirren) becomes magnetically attracted to a solitary diner inside the restaurant, the two start a secret thing under the nose of her precarious spouse.
With the help of the restaurant’s cook, the time the lovers share is kept secret from the vicious Albert…In place of a while. Despite the spectacular production design and clever camera masterpiece, this violent, unsettling and very menacingly comic masterpiece is not in favor of everybody. Individuals with the stomach for it, however, will reap generous rewards.
They cook the lover.
